The star was the only compass the escaped slaves had. The did not need perfect accuracy for as long as they reached a free state in the north they were free. But the slave states were able to get the Fugitive Slave Act through congress and if caught in the north by slave hunters they would be captured and returned to owners by law. Often citizens of free states would pay for the slaves to allow them to be free. Certainly this was a very ugly part of American History.
